A Leg-up, not a Hand-out for a Little Aussie Battler

Aussies have an international reputation for lending a hand to those who are doing it tough, it’s how our team was formed. Australians will support the underdog in a fight, and identify with the “Little Aussie Battler”. There are millions of Aussies who are doing it tough because of the housing crisis. Fitzgerald Housing aims to give them a leg-up, with your help.

The Kerrigans, iconic Aussie Battlers who knew the value of a home.

Fitzgerald Housing came about because of the tendency for Aussies to help out others. Our founder, Gary Fitzgerald, was in Cambodia helping out a mate with a guesthouse and doing some volunteer work for an NGO. Then the Pandemic trapped him and almost every other Aussie in Siem Reap.

Gary knows how to make the best of a bad situation, and as he formulated the idea for Fitzgerald Housing, he checked out the talent in the expat community. He met many of his team at fundraisers and rice runs for the local people. He noted the people who had the drive to keep themselves employed and continue to help others when they could.

The majority of the Fitzgerald Housing team were involved in some form of community work with NGOs or social enterprises to help out Cambodians before the pandemic. He found a team who already had the ingrained urge and the real experience with actual solutions to make life better for others. They shared the Aussie values of lending a hand, and giving a battler a leg-up

Fitzgerald Housing Charity was established to help Australians into affordable housing. But, although we are a charity, we are not asking for donations or hand-outs. Instead, we offer real solutions to the housing crisis. We provide secure investments in residential property for a fixed term and an “as-new” house at the end of the agreement. The house, or apartment, will be used for affordable housing for terms of 5, 10, or 15 years. As we have a range of residential properties, we can cater to the large or small investor.

The modest three bedroom home is now completely out of reach for Aussie families.

It’s a leg-up for Aussies who are battling to find secure, long-term housing to make into a home for themselves and their families.

Thousands of Aussies lost their homes in the fires and floods, many without insurance or finding that their insurance wouldn’t cover their losses. The pandemic saw thousands flee the large cities to country towns, which pushed up rent and house prices and pushed the locals out of their homes. The AirBnB and short term holiday rental market removed more than 100,000 (it could be as high as quarter of a million) houses and apartments from the available rental stock. In October 2022, Australia wide the vacancy rate for the rental market is 0.9% for the third consecutive month.

Older women are now the largest demographic at risk of homelessness. Families with kids are sleeping in their cars.

Hard-working Aussies can’t afford to live near their work anymore; it is having a detrimental effect on our national productivity. It’s not that people don’t want to work, but that they can’t access the jobs due to the exorbitant price of housing. Long commutes can make working full-time financially unviable due to the cost of transportation alone for those on low wages.

However, now it is not only low paid workers who can’t find homes near their work, but also people with professions like nurses, teachers, paramedics and firemen. The very people who proved they were the essential workers during the pandemic, the backbone of the country are at risk of homelessness. This situation is incredible in a country as wealthy as Australia. We know from painful past experiences that we can’t rely on governments to fix the problem. Someone has to do something and Gary formed Fitzgerald Housing to be that someone.
